"Deej" or "DJ"
Is it "Deej" or "D.J." ??? Good question - let me tell you the answer!!
I get this question a lot so here's the lowdown on the pronunciation and origin of the nickname...
Several years back I was playing with a band who's founder and lead singer was "Dave", so as the 2nd 'Dave'
At this point, ALL of my local musician friends and social media friends know me by my nickname "Deej".
So it has become preferred simply because it is much less confusing, but I do appreciate the individualism of the name as well...
That's kind of it in a nutshell... So there... now you know!
in the group it was decided I'd be the guy that needed a nickname (I know... go figure!! Right??)
Well, during my youth, my parents and some of my friends called me "D.J" (dee jay / my first 2 initials),
so that kinda gave us an obvious direction, BUT I didn't want to be confused with a dude spinning turntables..!!
"DJ" pretty quickly morphed into "Deej" (rhymes with "siege") and it stuck very well...
And let's face it, there are ALWAYS too many "Daves" in the room anyway!!
This really does makes it easy to know when I'm talking to a musician or someone who knows my music right away..!!
There are also many who enjoy using my complete artist name/ social media moniker "Deej SG" and that is fine...
After all, I do use the full "Deej SG" Band name/Artist name for any advertising, during introductions for gigs,
and of course on Facebook and other social media. You only live once... have some fun with it!
It really ties in nicely with my overall approach to playing... And that is: I don't want to be like anyone else..!!
(Don't you feel much better now?)
